Pairing Your Devices

Pairing is the process of securely connecting your Grid Connect product to the Grid Connect app and, where applicable, your home network and the Grid Connect cloud.

For most products, pairing follows the same basic process:

  1. Prepare the product for pairing
    Reset or place the product into pairing mode so it is ready to receive the required setup information.
  2. Use the Grid Connect app to provide the setup details
    Depending on the product, the app may use Auto Scan, QR code, EZ mode, AP mode or another supported pairing method.
  3. Complete the connection
    The product uses the information provided during pairing to connect to the required network and Grid Connect cloud, creating a secure link between the product and your Grid Connect account. Once paired and connected to the internet, compatible Grid Connect products can be monitored and controlled remotely through the app.
Pairing methods

Grid Connect products may support one or more pairing methods depending on the product. Although the pairing methods may differ, the goal is the same — to securely connect your product to your Grid Connect account and the required network or cloud service.

Auto Scan

Auto Scan automatically discovers compatible Grid Connect products that are nearby and ready for pairing.

Once your product is discovered, simply select it in the app and follow the onscreen instructions to complete setup.

Auto Scan is the default pairing experience for many newer Grid Connect products.

QR code pairing

QR code pairing is commonly used for compatible camera products.

During setup, the Grid Connect app generates a QR code containing the required pairing information. Hold the QR code (Phone) in front of the camera as instructed so the product can read the information and continue the pairing process.

EZ mode

EZ mode is one of the original Wi-Fi pairing methods used by Grid Connect products.

During pairing, the required Wi-Fi and cloud credentials are sent to the product through the local network so the product can join your router and connect to the Grid Connect cloud.

Because EZ mode relies on the local Wi-Fi environment, pairing can sometimes be affected by router settings or network configurations, particularly on some dual-band routers or networks using features such as band steering.

If EZ mode is unsuccessful, try another supported pairing method such as AP mode.

AP mode

AP mode is an alternative Wi-Fi pairing method where your Grid Connect product temporarily creates its own Wi-Fi network. Your phone connects directly to this temporary network so the app can pass the required Wi-Fi and cloud credentials to the product.

AP mode involves a few more steps than other pairing methods, but it is generally the most reliable Wi-Fi pairing option, particularly if another Wi-Fi pairing method is unsuccessful.

For detailed instructions, including how to identify AP mode, reset your product and complete the pairing process, refer to the AP Mode Pairing Guide.

LTE/4G pairing

Some products, such as compatible 4G cameras, connect to the Grid Connect cloud through a mobile network rather than your home Wi-Fi.

Although the product's ongoing internet connection is provided through the mobile network and service provider, the product still needs to be paired with the Grid Connect app.

This pairing process authenticates the product and securely links it to your Grid Connect account. Follow the product-specific instructions in the app to complete setup.

Before you start

Before pairing your product, make sure:

  • the latest version of the Grid Connect app is installed;
  • you are logged in to your Grid Connect account;
  • the product is powered and ready for setup;
  • for Wi-Fi products, you have your Wi-Fi network name and password available;
  • battery-powered products have sufficient charge.

For Wi-Fi products, your phone should be connected to the Wi-Fi network you want the product to join during setup.

Once pairing is complete, your phone does not need to remain connected to the same Wi-Fi network.As long as the product has an internet connection, compatible Grid Connect products can be monitored and controlled remotely using Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Prepare your product for pairing

Before adding a product in the Grid Connect app, the product needs to be placed into pairing mode.

The exact reset or pairing process varies between products. In general:

  • Lighting products: Turn the power OFF then ON (power cycle) for 3 or 5 times.
  • Power products and wiring accessories: Press and hold the power button or switch for 5 seconds.
  • Cameras and doorbells: Press and hold a reset button or pin for 5 seconds.
  • Other product categories may use different reset methods.

A flashing or pulsing indicator, or an audible prompt on some products, will usually indicate that the product is ready for pairing.

For the correct reset and pairing process for your specific product, follow the product-specific instructions shown in the Grid Connect app or refer to the Grid Connect Download Centre

This pairing process authenticates the product and securely links it toyour Grid Connect account.

Follow the product-specific instructions in the app to complete setup.

Pairing your product in the Grid Connect app

The Grid Connect app provides product-specific pairing guidance.

  1. From the Grid Connect app Home screen, tap the + icon, then tap Add Device.
  2. If a compatible product is automatically discovered nearby, select it and follow the onscreen prompts.
  3. If your product is not automatically discovered, you can find it manually by either:
    • searching for your specific product code — this is generally shown on the product rating label and usually ends in HA or MTRHA; or
    • selecting the relevant product category, such as Power, Indoor Lighting or Security, then finding and selecting your product from the list.
  4. Once your product is selected, follow the onscreen prompts. The app will guide you through the required reset process, network details and pairing steps.
Cannot find your product?

If you cannot find your specific product in the device list, select the General option, usually shown as the first option under the relevant product category, then follow the onscreen pairing instructions.

For example, compatible lighting products can use General Lighting if the specific model is not available in the list.
